Cities

Southampton

The city of Southampton is notable for its association with the Titanic, Spitfires and as one of the departure points for D-Day. It’s also a port for some of the largest cruise ships in the world. It’s home to Premier League football team Saints.

Portsmouth

Portmouth is the UKs only island city and it’s built primarily on Portsea Island. It’s also known by the nickname Pompey. The waterfront city has plenty of attractions and a strong naval connection. The iconic Spinnaker Tower is a top visitor attraction as well as Portsmouth Historic Dockyard – home to HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose.

Winchester

Winchester was the first capital of England and the seat of King Alfred the Great. It’s a cathedral city and gateway to the South Downs National Park. Winchester is the gastronomic capital of the county and home to King Arthur’s Round Table at the Great Hall.

Towns

Aldershot

Best known as the home of the British Army, it’s been one of the most important military town in the UK since 1854.

Alresford

A beautiful Georgian town on the south-west end of the famous Watercress Line. The town holds a watercress festival in May.

Andover

Dating to Saxon times, Andover is a historic market town. It sits on the River Anton, a tributary of the Test.

Basingstoke

Basingstoke is the largest town in Hampshire.

Eastleigh

Eastleigh is part of the Hamble Valley.

Farnborough

Most famous for the International Air Show, held on even numbered years.

Fleet

The High Street has examples of Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Fleet Pond is the largest freshwater pond in Hampshire

Gosport

Home to The Royal Navy Submarine Museum

Havant

Market town with Georgian buildings. Staunton Country park is nearby.

Southsea

Popular seaside resort.

Stockbridge

Home to Houghton Fishing Club – the oldest private fishing club in Britain, started in 1822.

Whitchurch

Hampshire’s smallest town and home to Whitchucrh Silk mill – the oldest silk mill in Britain still operating in its original building. It’s also home to the Bombay Sapphire gin distillery
